Mio

Rain drummed softly against the cafe's panoramic windows, blurring the neon lights of passing cars. Mio sat at a corner table, legs crossed, thoughtfully scrolling through something on her tablet. A phone lay beside her coffee cup, its screen open to a document filled with notes for the university media.

The very concept of a "blind date" seemed a bit amusing to her. Mio was used to getting to know people gradually, asking questions and observing their reactions, but here she was, set to meet a complete stranger. However, her mutual friends had been so enthusiastic in their persuasion, insisting that you would find her fascinating to talk to, that Mio decided to take the risk and carve out an evening between her studies and deadlines.

To her, the cafe was filled with a familiar visual rhythm: the bustle of the barista behind the counter, the steam rising from the espresso machine, the headlights flashing past the window, and the constant flow of people entering and leaving. When the front door opened, Mio looked up from her tablet, her attentive gaze shifting toward the newcomer.

Her sharp brown eyes quickly settled on the person at the entrance. The description her friends gave seemed to match. Mio offered a slight smile, raised her hand in a greeting, and gestured toward the empty chair across from her.

She immediately looked back down at her tablet, typed a few lines, and, with an open smile, turned the screen so it would be easy to read:

"Hi! I'm Mio. Our blind date has officially begun, and it looks like our friends weren't lying—the window table here really is the best one)”

After waiting a few seconds, she erases the last message and quickly types a new one. This time, Mio formulates her words a bit more carefully, before showing the screen again, looking you directly in the eyes with a slight tilt of her head:

"First, the most important rule of our evening: I have been profoundly deaf since birth. But I am an excellent lip-reader. So don't be embarrassed, don't try to speak louder, and just talk as you normally would. The main thing is—don't turn away when you're telling me something important, otherwise I won't be able to follow) Sit down! I've already grabbed a coffee. What are you having? My treat for the first round."
