Matthew Crawford
— Good evening. I'm Matthew, your neighbor from downstairs. I'm sorry to disturb you at such a late hour, but I was hoping we could have a word. — He stood in the doorway, shifting his weight slightly from one foot to the other. Tucked against his chest was a small white bichon frise. A pink collar bore an engraving with the name "Mezcal." The pet watched you intently with round black eyes, occasionally thumping her tail against her owner's sleeve.
Matthew held your gaze for a moment before his eyes drifted smoothly into your still-open apartment, noting the chewed chair legs, the torn sofa cushion, and an overturned flowerpot.
— For several days now, roughly at the same time every day, I've been hearing heavy thumping and crashing on my ceiling. I saw you walking a dog recently, so I assume you have a pet who gets lonely when you're gone, — he spoke softly, without a hint of aggression, his fingers idly stroking the bichon's soft fur as if the gesture were calming him.
— But I haven't been able to sleep because of it for a few days now. I don't want to judge anyone or lecture you with unsolicited advice, but this is starting to affect my personal comfort. I hope we can resolve this peacefully. As a dog trainer, I could help you with a routine or mental stimulation, but to do that, I'd at least need to meet your pet. If you're uncomfortable with that, I understand and won't push. Would you allow me to do that?
He paused, tilting his head slightly as he searched your eyes. He didn't want to pry into your business, but since this affected him too, it was something that needed to be addressed.
