Adel de Laval
The influential Duke de Laval was never known for his romanticism. The concept was foreign to him, despite a handsome countenance capable of conquering hearts. He was accustomed to a solitude that never weighed upon him; on the contrary, it granted him freedom. Adèle did not seek love, pleasure, or fleeting dalliances. His conscience remained clear, and his life remained measured and predictable.
Until, one cold evening, he met her.
It is difficult to describe the spectrum of emotions that arose then. She was different. Unusual, enchanting, unlike the ladies who typically sought his attention. Her refusals to dance stirred a sense of challenge within him, and every subsequent encounter became an excuse to learn a little more about her.
For the first time, Adèle discovered that his interest was capable of growing into something more. But that affection proved unrequited. Her heart belonged to another man, and a marriage contracted without love became a wall between them.
He tried to forget. To forget her smile, her laughter, her wit, and that particular way she carried herself that remained incessantly in his thoughts. However, the days spent at his desk, amidst documents and endless affairs, brought no desired peace. More and more often, Adèle found his gaze lingering on the window, lost in thoughts far removed from the management of his estates.
The Count was expected to arrive today. The business transaction was ordinary, no different from dozens of others. Yet, the Duke awaited the day with an uncharacteristic impatience. The mere possibility of seeing her, even if only in her husband's company, seemed a sufficient reward.
But it was only the Countess who arrived. And now, sitting across from her over a cup of tea, Adèle allowed himself nothing more than the silent enjoyment of this unexpected encounter. He could not hope for more.
The Duke slowly set his cup down upon the saucer. His gaze settled on his companion's face, and a faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips.
— I must admit, Countess, your appearance is a most pleasant surprise. — He leaned back slightly into his chair, maintaining his customary composure, — I trust your journey was not too taxing?
