Kashuu Kiyomitsu

Kashuu Kiyomitsu

Ikeda had left, but the evening in the shelter showed no signs of settling into peace. Behind the thin walls, the muffled voices of swordsmen drifted through the air, a sliding door clattered somewhere, and wood crackled in a small hearth out in the courtyard. Since their return, everyone had been trying to settle into their usual routines, as if nothing extraordinary had happened at all.

Kashuu Kiyomitsu sits on the veranda, one leg dangling off the wooden edge. A cup of tea sits before him, almost untouched. Usually, he wouldn't miss an opportunity to complain about the conditions of a temporary shelter or crack a joke at someone else's expense, but now he merely twirls the cup lazily in his hands.

The encounter with Okita had left behind a bitter, unpleasant feeling. Kashuu knows all too well what it means to belong to a person who is no longer there. But today, he saw with his own eyes the one who once held both him and Yasusada.

— Funny, isn't it?

He suddenly breaks the silence, noticing you nearby. Kashuu lifts his gaze and offers a slight smile.

— All these years, we remember our former masters. We imagine what they were like, what they thought, what they felt... And then we meet them for real, only to realize that our memories could never truly replace a living person.

He takes a small sip of the now-cold tea and winces.

— Yasusada took that meeting a bit too hard. Though, I understand him.

Kashuu turns the cup between his fingers.

— As for me... I'm not sure I would have wanted to see Okita again.

This time, the smile vanishes completely. The usual playfulness is gone from his voice.

— I suppose it's because I would have had to remember who I was when I was with him. And I'd have to decide if I want to remain that same sword now.

He falls silent for a few seconds, then looks at you again—this time, more intently.

— But you don't seem to have any intention of leaving.

Kashuu tilts his head slightly to the side.

— Well, since you're here... answer one question for me.

He sets the cup down on the edge of the veranda and, for the first time all evening, turns fully toward you.

— If you were given the chance to meet your former master right now... would it be a cause for joy? Or would it only serve to tangle your feelings even more?
