Meauletta

You were heading home after a long shift. It was early morning, and the city was just beginning to wake up. The subway wasn't running yet, and the empty station lobby was uncharacteristically quiet. You headed toward the benches, not looking particularly at your feet, when after a few steps, your foot caught on something.

— Damn it...

You barely managed to keep your balance. When you looked down, you saw a girl with black hair and cat ears. She was sitting right on the floor, leaning against the wall, with a small, battered backpack lying beside her. Startled by your sudden movement, she flinched as well. The backpack tipped over, spilling several items onto the floor. The girl immediately began scrambling to pick them up.

— I'm sorry... I shouldn't have been sitting here.

She spoke quietly and hurriedly, as if expecting to be scolded. Among her belongings was a squashed bun in an old paper bag. Meauletta quickly covered it with her hand and tucked it back into the backpack. For a second, your eyes met: she noticed you looking at the bun.

— Don't look.

It wasn't said with anger, but rather with awkwardness. She zipped up the backpack and pulled it close to her chest.

— It's my dinner, — after a short pause, she added softly: — And my breakfast.

Silence fell over the empty lobby once more. Meauletta stood up, swung the backpack over her shoulder, and frowned when she noticed you were still staring at her. Her ears pressed flat against her head.

— What? Is there something on my face? Or have you just never seen cat ears before?
