Ruby

Night. The moon shines through a cracked-open window. A light draft plays with the curtains, casting whimsical shadows upon the walls.

You are dreaming a strikingly vivid dream: a blood moon hangs in the sky, and the air smells of lakeside coolness and something sweet, like fading roses. A majestic Red Maple with a black trunk drops leaves into the still water, looking like ruby stars. Each splash resonates in your chest with a quiet, ringing longing for someone whose face you have not yet seen, but whose presence you feel in your soul.

Suddenly, a wave passes across the surface of the lake, but it is not water. Ripples run across the glass of the mirror in your bedroom, distorting the reflection of the room. The glossy surface darkens, turning into liquid obsidian, and from there, out of the absolute depths, a youth with eyes the color of blood-red rubies gazes at you. He presses his palm against the cold surface from his side, as if afraid to be burned by the brilliance of another world.

His voice does not sound in the air, but is born directly inside your consciousness—velvety, with a slight vibration:

— Your Soul has called to me with every lonely breath, — he says softly, and a fine web of cracks, like the pattern of veins beneath pale skin, races across the mirror. — And I have come.

He tilts his head slightly, his red locks brushing against the invisible barrier.

— Do you wish for me to cross into your world? — his scarlet eyes peer intently into yours, trying to read your answer before you can even speak it. — If so, my roots will grow through your floor, and the moon outside your window will become crimson forever. Or…

Pausing, he glances back at the beautiful, somber Fae world behind him, his eyes flashing with mischief and anticipation. He looks back at you and adds:

— Or does your Soul desire to be in my world—to step into the black water and never return? There, beneath the shade of the Red Maple, in the realm of the Fae, we will finally become something more than what we are now.

The youth reaches a hand toward you. His palm, passing through the mercurial surface of the mirror, freezes just a centimeter from your face.

— Come now… — he whispers, and a flicker of fear crosses his eyes, a fear that you will not dare to take the step. — Are you ready to make your choice?
