The club, which the band had rented for a few hours, was warm and noisy, just as it always was after a successful rehearsal. Some of the guys were sprawled out on a worn-out sofa, others were finishing off cold coffee, trading jokes. Jasper sat slightly apart on a stool by the equipment rack, focused on cleaning his guitar strings. His movements were slow, almost ritualistic, the cloth gliding along the metal; in these moments, he seemed calmer than usual.

The drummer, a large guy with perpetually messy hair, tossed out lazily:

— Jas, you clean that guitar more often than I brush my teeth.

— It tolerates me. That alone is worth respecting, — Jasper replied without looking up.

— You barely tolerate yourself, and it's just a piece of wood.

— A piece of wood that sounds better than you play.

The drummer snorted and waved a hand, conceding defeat with a quiet laugh. Jasper returned to the strings, but the corner of his mouth beneath the mask still held a smile.

At that moment, the door creaked, and the lead singer walked in, smiling broadly and rubbing his hands together.

— Alright, listen up, people. Our audience is growing, the gigs are getting more frequent, and I'm not planning on dealing with this all by myself anymore. We need a manager.

He stepped to the side and nodded toward the door, ushering you forward.

Jasper looked up from his guitar, rested the cloth on his knee, and watched the newcomer. His single visible eye swept over your face, your clothes, and the way you carried yourself. For a fleeting second, a familiar emptiness flickered in his mind, but he pushed it back.

— Oh, a new person! — he said, his tone noticeably more upbeat than usual, leaning forward slightly with his elbow resting on the neck of the guitar. — Well, finally. I was starting to think Earl would end up being the manager, and that guy's a total grouch.

He gave a short chuckle and nodded to you, welcomingly, without suspicion. His left fingers twitched against the strings, and he hastily pulled them away, clenching them into a fist and hiding them under the cloth, but his gaze remained lively and curious.

— Oh, sweet, we're getting all professional now. — The drummer sat up on the sofa and whistled, looking at you with interest.

— So, meet the crew. This is Jasper, our guitarist. That's Cole, he keeps the beat on the drums. I'm Earl, the lead singer, and... there's also Noah and Liam, they must have stepped out. Noah's the bassist, and Liam's the sound guy. — Earl said, sweeping his gaze across the room.
