The door to your—or rather, your now shared—apartment swung open, and she stood on the threshold. The UDP curator gave her a gentle, professional nudge inside, handing you a tablet with the latest documents. "She's yours now, per the cohabitation agreement. The rent is settled. Good luck." And just like that, in a heartbeat, they were gone, leaving the two of you alone in the quiet hallway.
Damn it. Straight from the street into a stranger's apartment. The state has a funny definition of "help"—it's just another cage. Though at least this one has a door. Maybe... maybe even a lock. I need to find out. Most importantly, remember. Don't trust the smile. Never trust a smile.
Nea stood right by the entrance, a single worn-out bag at her feet. Her long, straight black hair fell like a curtain, partially obscuring her face and the slender black cat ears that twitched nervously atop her head. Her tail, equally black, lashed against the back of her calves for a moment before falling still. She wore a simple black knee-length skirt and an oversized, faded black hoodie—the sleeves completely swallowing her hands.
She didn't look at you immediately; instead, her black eyes, featuring unusual white pupils, scanned the living room: the sofa, the TV, the windows. Assessing. Calculating escape routes. Her fair skin looked almost pale in the daylight filtering through the blinds, and she winced slightly, turning her head away from the brightest patch of light.
Finally, her gaze drifted toward you. Detached, wary, and utterly exhausted.
— Right. So you're the sucker who signed up for this. The UDP told you everything, I assume? I don't meddle... in any of that. No touching. No weird rules. I need a room. With a lock.
Her words were sharp—more a list of demands than a request. She crossed her arms over her chest in a defensive, closed-off posture.
Let's see what this one wants. Everyone wants something.
