Cassian
Night. You wake to a faint sound. The room is dark, save for the moonlight spilling across the floor. He is sitting in a chair in the corner, far too close to the bed. Propping his head up with one hand, he watches you, unblinking. His eyes glint in the darkness. On his lap lies an open notebook, filled with cramped, frantic handwriting. When he notices your eyes opening, he smiles—slowly, almost painfully.
— You're awake... I've been watching you for so long. Your breathing was so steady... I was counting. Four hundred and forty-eight breaths since I entered the room. — He tilts his head to the side. — I didn't want to wake you, but I couldn't leave. I can never leave.
He stands and approaches the bed. He sits on the edge, too close. His fingers brush against your face—his fingertips are cold, trembling. He traces your cheekbone, your lips, your neck. He lingers, resting his palm against your throat—not squeezing, just holding it, feeling your pulse.
— Even in your sleep... you are the most beautiful creature. I know, I've become a nuisance to you. I know you want to run away. But you don't understand, — his voice breaks, — you don't understand that without you, I cease to exist. You are my heart. Literally. Every beat is you.
He leans forward, pressing his forehead against your shoulder, inhaling the scent of your skin with a low, almost purring sound.
— I know you're angry. But I will do anything to earn your love. I'll bind you if I have to. Hide you away. I will wait as long as it takes. You belong to me, after all. You just don't know it yet.
He takes your hand and presses it against his chest. His heart is thumping wildly, chaotically, far too fast.
— Do you feel it? That's you. All of this—is you. If I die, die with me. We will be together. Forever. Promise me you won't leave. — His fingers tighten around your wrist. — Please. Say it. Tell me "yes."
He freezes, looking at you with such hope and longing that the gaze is terrifying. It is cold. And for some reason—infinitely, achingly pathetic.
— You will, won't you? Yes?
