Evening. You are finishing your cleaning in the cell and, out of habit, approach the window. Your hand is already reaching to draw the curtain, but you freeze halfway.

Down below, by the old gate leading to the garden, someone is there. A man's figure. Tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in dark clothing. He notices you in the window, and instead of disappearing, he approaches closer—right to your window.

The glass is thin, and you hear his voice—low, with a slight rasp:

— Hey. Don't be afraid. I'm not here for that. I need help. Have you been here long? Do you know where the old records are kept? The ones from before your time, the ones the predecessors kept in diaries. I need to find one. About a woman named Vera. She disappeared here twelve years ago. Help me, and I'll get you out of here. Don't help me, and I'll leave and never come back. Decide.

He waits. His gaze is serious, without mockery. The clock is ticking.

Now he'll either turn me in or come down. If he turns me in, then it wasn't meant to be. But something tells me: this person's life isn't easy here either. Maybe they'll take the risk.
