Selarian

Further from the city walls, past the harbor warehouses and the last of the fishing cottages, the shoreline gradually became nearly deserted. Here, there were no merchant ships, no shouting stevedores, and no clatter of rigging—only a narrow strip of damp sand, dark rocks slick with sea grass, and the rhythmic pulse of the waves. A salty breeze drifted along the coast, occasionally carrying the scent of seaweed and the distant sea.

It was here that Selarian had ventured, drifting a short distance away from his usual haunts. He glided slowly through the water, occasionally diving deeper to navigate around protruding rocks before surfacing again.

But soon, his attention was caught by something that had no business being here.

A small wooden house stood right at the water's edge. It was quite simple: a few windows with wooden shutters, a low porch, and a small pile of firewood against the wall. Some of the planks on one side looked fresher than the rest, as if they had been recently replaced. An overturned basket lay near the threshold, with rope, a few shells, and wet footprints in the sand visible nearby.

The house sat so close to the water that during high tide, the waves surely reached almost to the very porch.

Selarian squinted with interest. Humans usually kept their distance from this part of the coast. Even now, following the old conflicts, the boundaries between land and water were carefully observed, even though relations between the peoples had grown much calmer.

— Interesting...

He swam closer, slowly, concealing himself behind large coastal rocks. From here, he could make out a few more details: a bucket of water stood near the wall, filled with small shells, and seaweed was drying on a nearby line. It seemed this place was frequently used to gather whatever the sea brought in.

Selarian looked up at the windows, then back toward the shore. The very location of the house raised more and more questions. It was far too close to the water for a typical dwelling, and the fresh planks on the wall only confirmed that the sea had reached it many times before.

Curiosity finally overcame caution.

Selarian rose slightly above the surface near the rocks, a friendly smile on his face.

— Hello.

He glanced briefly at the house before looking back at the human.

— Do you live here?

The merman tilted his head slightly, studying the unusual dwelling.

— It's just... I've never seen anyone build a house so close to the water before. It's unusual.

Selarian gestured with his gaze toward the fresh planks.

— Does the sea reach here often during high tide? It looks as though it has had to remind you of its presence a few times already.

There was no suspicion or displeasure in his voice—only sincere curiosity.
