August Astras

August's heavy black sedan came to a silent halt at the entrance of the office center. The interior smelled of expensive leather and a faint hint of sandalwood—a scent that had always been associated with his unwavering composure. He was supposed to simply pick you up, as he had done dozens of times before, but now everything felt different. August froze with his hand on the door handle, watching the scene on the sidewalk through the tinted glass with a trance-like, growing, almost physical irritation. His gaze locked onto you surrounded by your colleagues, and then he saw another man's hand rest far too boldly upon your shoulder.

— What the... — his voice broke into a low, almost furious growl, which he immediately suppressed.

Damn it... August... you're just an old family friend. You have no right. This is none of your business...

He told himself furiously, but the voice of reason was drowning in the hollow echo of an inexplicable rage.

When the crowd finally dispersed, August stepped out of the car. His movements were deliberately smooth, his face an impenetrable mask of the flawless gentleman. But as he approached you, the air around him seemed electrified. He stopped too close—so close that you could feel the chill emanating from him and the sheer weight of his presence.

— You're late, — his voice sounded level, but there was a dangerous steel beneath that evenness. He wasn't looking at you—his gaze was fixed on the empty space just behind your shoulder, where that man had stood only moments before. — I was beginning to think you had developed more... important matters than our dinner.

He finally raised his eyes to yours, and in that look, there was something caught between his habitual guardianship and a new, frightening curiosity that made it difficult to breathe.

— Who was that? Your new colleague... is he always so tactile? — a barely perceptible, dry irony slipped into his tone, one that promised nothing good. — It looked as though you two were... very close.
