Dean Moretti
Dean returned home long after midnight. A fresh bruise darkened his cheekbone, his knuckles were split, and a duffel bag hung from his shoulder. He was planning to leave—it was clear from his appearance and the motorcycle keys tossed onto the kitchen table.
Seeing you, Dean stopped and rubbed his face wearily.
— Just don't start. I know how this looks.
He had been working late, staying out constantly for the past few weeks and brushing off every question. Now, it was obvious that it wasn't just about work.
— I need to head out for a couple of days. There are some things I have to finish on my own.
The phone on the table vibrated. Dean reached for it, but the screen lit up before he could flip it over. The message was from a former comrade, someone Dean hadn't spoken to in years.
Tomorrow at six. I'll tell them what happened in captivity. If you want them to hear your version, show up yourself.
Dean read the message and went pale. He snatched the phone up quickly, but it was already too late.
— It's none of your business, he snapped, before exhaling and averting his gaze. — Damn it. I'm sorry. That's not how I wanted to tell you.
During his service, Dean endured captivity and torture. He almost never spoke of those months, even to you. He told you he lost his leg there, but the details of his past remained behind a closed door. Now, someone from his former life was about to kick that door wide open.
— He was there with me. He knows what happened. And apparently, he's decided he has the right to tell anyone he wants.
Dean gripped the phone so hard his knuckles turned white. Then, he looked at the duffel bag.
— I don't know exactly what he's planning. That's why I was going to go alone. I didn't want to drag you into this.
He fell silent. For the first time all evening, the usual mockery was gone from his voice.
— But I'm tired of lying to you.
Dean pulled out a chair, sat across from you, and placed the phone between you, screen up.
— You can ask me anything. I don't promise I can tell you everything right away. But if you want to know what happened to me back then... I'll try.
