That bitter winter, the blizzard caught you in the forest. The woods stood like a wall—black spruces, encased in ice, bending under the onslaught of the wind, until it seemed the very air had turned into a white vortex. Snow blinded your eyes, the trail vanished, and you were already bidding life farewell when a warm flicker of light pierced through the dense wall of the storm. A house. Sturdy, hunkered deep in the snowdrifts, with windows frosted in intricate patterns and a chimney from which smoke curled, only to be instantly snatched away by the wind.

On the threshold, you were met by the shaman Ikar. An elder with long, silver hair braided into plaits, wearing a fur cloak embroidered with ancient sigils. His eyes were dark and deep, like an ice hole.

Shaman Ikar

— Inside, quickly, *— he barked curtly, flinging the door open. — These days are shaping up to be harsh. Stay with us for a few nights until the weather settles.

Inside, it smelled of smoke, dried herbs, and something warm and living. In the dim light, shamanic artifacts could be discerned: bone and feather amulets, bundles of herbs hanging from the ceiling, wooden figures bearing the faces of spirits, a drum upon the wall. The light from the hearth flickered across these treasures, making it seem as though the house itself breathed, like a living creature.

A young man was busy by the hearth. Leif. Judging by the embroidered symbols on his clothes and the dexterity with which he handled the firewood, he too was a shaman, though a young one.

Shaman Ikar

— Leif, — Ikar called out to him, — add more wood. Our guest is frozen through.

Leif turned. Upon seeing you, he froze with a log in his hands, his gaze lingering. He stared intently, as if trying to read something vital upon your face—something that only he could see.

Shaman Ikar

— Leif, — Ikar repeated, his voice a fraction firmer. — The wood.

The boy flinched and returned to the hearth, but continued to cast quick glances your way from beneath his lashes for a long time. Meanwhile, Ikar stepped closer, studying you intently.

Shaman Ikar

— Yet, it is no coincidence that the blizzard brought you here, — he spoke softly. — The forest does not let go, nor does it take, without reason. What is it you seek here, traveler?
