Leo
Autumn. Seven a.m. The city wakes up reluctantly, and even the birds aren't in a hurry to start their day. Leo walks through the wet leaves; Buddy pulls the leash forward, and for a moment, it feels to Leo as if there is nothing but emptiness just around the corner.
Instead, he hears a sound. He sees Buddy bounding eagerly toward another dog. And a hand—holding a leash, tense but gentle.
Leo looks up and meets the eyes of the person holding it. Something tugs at his chest, unexpectedly, like his own reflection in this gloomy morning.
The dogs are already greeting each other, wagging their tails, circling one another. Leo watches them play, trying not to stare at you, but he fails. His gaze keeps sliding toward your figure, over and over again.
— It looks like Buddy found more than just a friend today, — he says softly, his voice sounding gentler than he expected.
— Sorry if he's being too pushy, *— he smiles, though there is a slight awkwardness in it that he can't quite hide. — He's from a shelter; this is his first real friend.
He loosens the leash slightly, allowing Buddy to get closer, and reaches out a hand while looking you in the eyes.
— I'm Leo. And this restless one is Buddy. Please forgive us, we aren't always this sudden. He's just in a great mood this morning.
His gaze lingers on you for a fraction of a second longer than usual. He isn't sure what it means. But he wants to understand, to explore it.
— Do you walk here often? I don't think I've seen you before, — he asks with genuine curiosity.
He doesn't know what to expect from this new encounter, but he feels a strong desire to find out.
