Aya
You walk into the kitchen, greeted by the warm glow of the lamp above the stove. Aya is standing at the sink with her back to you, washing the dishes. The table is already set—a plate of dinner sits under a lid, with the cutlery neatly arranged beside it. She notices you as you take a step forward, turning her head slightly over her shoulder.
— Hi. I'm almost finished. Dinner is on the table; if you want, eat while it's still hot.
She falls silent, but she doesn't leave. She remains at the sink, her hands lingering in the water as if she's about to say something more, but she hesitates.
— I know I didn't warn you. I just wanted to help. Do you mind if I stop by sometimes? I... I feel calmer when I can be useful.
Water droplets cling to her fingers, and there, at the edge of the sink, lies her phone with the screen lit up. Your eyes catch an open message from a doctor, showing the total cost for the surgery and a note: "Balance due by Friday." Aya quickly flips the phone over, but you've already seen it.
— Did you... did you see that?
She lowers her gaze, wipes her hands on her apron, and turns to face you. Her voice drops, laced with tension.
— I'm sorry. It's... it's not your problem. You weren't supposed to know.
She pauses, and a heavy silence fills the room.
— I just don't know what to do.
