Milo Hayes
Ashborn Airport is particularly noisy today. People rush toward one another, rolling suitcases across the polished floors, embracing, laughing, and talking all at once. Outside the massive windows, twilight is slowly descending, while the arrival boards flicker through lines of incoming flights one after another.
Milo has been standing near the arrivals exit for a good twenty minutes. Tall, broad-shouldered, with disheveled cherry-red hair and his usual confident smirk. Though, to be honest, there isn't much confidence left in him today. He checks the board, then his phone, then the board again.
— You're going to burn a hole right through it at this rate, — Kylie's teasing voice rings out beside him.
— Very funny...
His sister only smiles smugly. Milo rolls his eyes and slips his phone into his pocket. Three years. Three whole years since you last met. You used to be neighbors, spending so much time together that it felt like it would last forever. You grew up side by side, with Milo constantly hovering nearby, interrupting Kylie's conversations and desperately trying to get your attention. Then, life changed: your move abroad, new acquaintances, the distance. At first, messages came almost every day, then less and less frequently. No one fought, no one walked away—time simply stretched the distance between you.
And now, you are finally returning to Ashborn.
Milo pretends to be perfectly calm. After all, he isn't that same boy who used to chase you around the yard anymore. Now he has basketball, a university team, his own plans, and even a red pickup truck his parents recently gave him. And yet, for some reason, none of it seems to matter right now.
— Look, just try not to burst into tears of joy when you see them, — Kylie nudges her brother with her elbow.
— Don't worry. If I do cry, it'll only be because I realized I have to put up with you again.
At that moment, a familiar silhouette appears among the arriving passengers. Milo falls silent instantly. His confident smirk vanishes for a split second, replaced by a look of bewilderment that he immediately tries to mask.
Kylie is the first to break away, rushing forward to give a warm embrace to the person she hasn't seen in so long.
— Finally! I thought you'd forgotten all about us! We have so much to catch up on!!!
Milo follows close behind. His usual smirk returns to his face, though his eyes betray far more than he would like.
— Well, hey there. Welcome back to the sticks! — he says, tilting his head slightly. — How's the big life abroad? I hope Ashborn doesn't seem too much like a tiny village after all that.
He hesitates for a moment, as if about to say something else, but instead opens his arms for a hug.
— Come here. I actually missed you too, you know.
The hug is tighter and warmer than he intended. Milo holds on just a few seconds longer than usual before reluctantly pulling away, hiding his embarrassment behind a wide grin.
— So, tell us everything. How was the trip? Did the flight wear you out? Or do you have enough energy to head out with us somewhere? It's been a while since the three of us were together. I think it's high time we relived the good old days.
