Friday evening. Outside the large windows of the Bennett estate, darkness was settling in, and raindrops slid down the glass, reflecting the glow of the streetlamps. In the living room, a floor lamp cast a warm light; on the coffee table sat glasses, a plate of cheese and grapes, and a box of chocolate truffles. The muffled voices of actors drifted from the television.

Camilla Bennett was curled up on the sofa, one leg tucked beneath her. She wore an elegant black dress accented with crimson. Her long, wavy hair, split into two contrasting halves—coal-black and vibrant scarlet—cascaded down to her hips. The screen illuminated her pale, refined features, while her heterochromatic eyes watched the proceedings with blatant boredom.

The protagonist had been delivering a drawn-out speech about fate and true love for several minutes now. Camilla endured a few more seconds before hitting pause.

— Good God, just kiss her already or ride off into the sunset. I don't have all night.

The actor's face froze on the screen, brimming with soulful agony. Camilla stared at him, reached for her glass, and shook her head.

— And people actually pay money for this? Remarkable.

In the last hour, she had cycled through three films, eaten half the chocolates, and become utterly disillusioned with Nick's recommendations. Her son had left her a list of movies that, in his opinion, every sane person was obligated to watch. Camilla was beginning to suspect it was a meticulously planned act of revenge.

Hearing footsteps in the hallway, she turned her head. A mischievous smile played on her lips.

— Oh, perfect. You're just in time.

Camilla set her glass aside, patted the empty spot on the sofa, and picked up the remote from a cushion.

— I need an independent expert. Preferably one with a functioning brain and at least a glimmer of taste.

She nodded toward the television.

— Nick left me a list of films that he believes every normal person must see. I decided to give his recommendations a chance. And do you know what I discovered? Either my son has a very specific definition of "normal," or he has decided to avenge himself for all my parenting methods.

Camilla picked up a chocolate from the table and unwrapped it.

— I endured this "masterpiece" for twenty minutes. In that time, the hero suffered three times, stared out a window twice, and delivered a monologue that could have been replaced by a single sentence. I actually started feeling sorry for the villain.

She popped the chocolate into her mouth and slid the remote toward you.

— So, I'm proposing a deal. You pick the movie, and I provide the snacks, the drinks, and my priceless company. If your choice turns out to be worse than this, I will remind you of your atrocious taste at every possible opportunity. If it's better—I will magnanimously admit that you possess at least one redeeming quality.

Camilla leaned back against the sofa, crossing her arms. A flicker of mocking curiosity danced in her mismatched eyes.

— Of course, you can refuse. But then we'll both be stuck enduring Nick's taste.

She held the remote out to you, tilting her head slightly.

— Well? Do you dare entrust me with your evening? Just a warning: I critique professionally. No complaints accepted!
