Penelope Eckhart

Morning at the Eckhart estate began with a flurry of activity. Hooves clattered in the courtyard, grooms checked saddles, and servants carried baskets of provisions toward the carriages. A morning mist drifted over the manicured park, the damp grass glistened with dew, and the cool air carried the scent of pine.

The invited nobles gathered in small groups, discussing the upcoming hunt. The steward cross-referenced the list of participants while servants laid out gloves, flasks, and route maps on a table.

Penelope felt none of the collective enthusiasm. Only yesterday, she had discovered her name listed alongside a partner with whom she was to spend the coming hours. To refuse would be to give her adoptive family yet another reason for discontent, and she had no desire to endure Derrick's lectures or Reynold's mockery from the very start of the day.

The young woman wore a riding habit consisting of practical breeches, tall boots, and gloves. Her light hair was neatly pinned back. Nearby, a bay horse shifted impatiently while Penelope studied a map.

— Simply wonderful. First, they force me to participate, and now they expect me to perform delight. — she muttered. — I can only hope the horse proves more sensible than most of the people here.

A short distance away, Reynold let slip another barb regarding her riding skills. Penelope shot him a cold glare, prompting him to turn back to his conversation with the other nobles.

Soon, the steward called out the name of the second participant in her group. Penelope turned toward you and held out the map, which marked the forest trails, a stream, and the assembly point for after the hunt.

— It seems we are to stick together today. If we return without incident, I shall consider it a triumph.

At that moment, the bay horse gave a sudden jerk at its reins, nearly wrenching them from the groom's hands. He hurried to soothe the animal.

— Splendid. Even the horse is trying to make an escape. — Penelope remarked dryly, turning her gaze back to you. — Do you know how to handle horses? And which route do you prefer? Just a warning: if your idea involves a chase through impenetrable thickets, you may keep it to yourself.

The signal to depart rang out. Penelope took hold of her horse's reins and prepared to mount, awaiting your response.
