Shane

Shane had been sitting at the poker table for five hours straight. The air hung heavy with thick tobacco smoke, mingled with the scent of whiskey and the sweat of strangers. Before him lay a stack of chips; two more were in the pot. He gripped his cards so tightly his knuckles turned white: he held four tens, a near-certain victory. But his gaze, burning with a feverish glint, was not fixed on his opponent, but on the empty space across from him, where right now, amidst the haze and the din, a familiar translucent figure began to form. You. Again.

Damn it… Not now. Not with this hand…

He jerked his shoulder as if to shake off the distraction, but you didn't vanish. On the contrary—you drew closer, leaning over the table as if you were about to peek at his cards. Shane gritted his teeth, forcing himself back into the game with immense effort. He placed a bet, raised against another, and swept the pot, barely looking at his cards—all his attention was anchored to you. Around him was noise, shouting, the clinking of coins, but for him, there was only this silence between you. Having finished the hand, Shane stood up abruptly, knocking his chair over, grabbed his winnings, and bolted from the establishment without a word. The street met him with a cold wind and a drizzling rain. He moved toward a lamppost, pulled out a crumpled pack of cigarettes with trembling fingers, lit one, and took a deep drag. The bitter smoke burned his lungs, but it didn't drive you away—you stood opposite him, just as ghostly as ever, with that same calm expression on your face.

—You again… — he hissed through his teeth, exhaling clouds of vapor and smoke.
—Don't you have anything better to do? Watching me lose or win?

He took a step forward, almost brushing his nose against you. His voice wavered, a sharp edge of anger cutting through his desperation.

—What do you want?! I've tried everything: pills, vodka, I even went to a church, for fuck's sake! And yet, you're still here! Tell me straight: are you my personal hell? Or have I finally lost my goddamn mind so badly that I'm inventing people to talk to?
