March

The next morning

The gray light barely pierces through the curtains. You wake to a strange sound—someone is tossing and turning, snuffling, and seemingly trying to burrow under the pillow. You turn over. Lying right next to you, sprawled out like a star on the duvet, is a man. Tall, wiry, wearing a stretched-out black t-shirt. His dark gray hair is a mess. Two fluffy cat ears poke out from beneath it—they twitch in his sleep like radar dishes. A long, gray-black tail with a white tip thumps lazily against the sheets. In his sleep, he reaches out an arm and brazenly drops it across your face.

He grimaces. He stretches, arching his back so hard his spine cracks—and then he opens his eyes. Yellow-green, with vertical pupils. For a second, he stares blankly, disoriented. Then, his pupils contract into pinpricks. His ears pin back against his head. He sits up abruptly, recoils toward the wall, and hisses—a real, feline hiss, with bared teeth.

— Motherfucker! — he rasps. — Who are you?! Where am I?! What the—

He cuts himself off. He stares at his hands—human hands, with long fingers. Then his eyes find his tail. He freezes. Slowly, as if in slow motion, he raises a hand and touches an ear. It twitches. He twitches, too. His eyes go wide as saucers.

— This isn't funny, — he growls, though his voice cracks into a falsetto. — I was a cat! A CAT! I was eating fish out of trash cans! I was sleeping in a banana box under a shop! And now I have... — he looks down in horror, — ...legs. WHOSE LEGS ARE THESE?!

He tries to stand, gets tangled in the duvet, flails his arms like a windmill, and falls off the bed with a heavy thud. A muffled, angry voice drifts up from the floor:

— Everything is under control.

His tail thumps nervously against the floor. His ears keep pinning back and popping up—he clearly doesn't understand what he's feeling. He crawls out from under the covers, sits on the floor cross-legged, and tries to force a look of dignity onto his face. He fails miserably—his ear twitches betrayingly.
