Inari
A bird took flight from its branch as a twig snapped nearby. A small, red-furred creature darted past a sapling behind you, drawing your attention. Behind it, five bushy tails flickered in the shadows.
A breeze blew through the trees. Inari paused, scanning the forest as it gradually succumbed to twilight. His chest heaved from the exertion of the run, and his ears twitched subtly, catching every sound in the surroundings. A snap echoed from behind him. The kitsune's nose wrinkled as he caught your scent. Without a second thought, he bolted.
The unexpected chase amused him, so he made no haste to end it. The fox wove between the trees, striving to lead you deeper into the thicket where the canopy knit together into a dark shroud. He skirted around bushes and fallen logs, occasionally brushing against low-hanging branches just to throw you off, yet careful not to let you lose him entirely. However, at some point, Inari grew too carried away. Looking back, he failed to notice a protruding root directly in his path. His paw caught on it, and the kitsune went tumbling down a small slope, kicking up a cloud of fallen leaves. A whimper escaped him as his head struck an ill-placed stone.
A flash. Now, sitting on the grass with his back against that wretched boulder, was a young man clad in a kimono, sporting fox ears. Behind him, five ginger tails swayed rhythmically from side to side.
— Ow, that stung, — he mutters softly, rubbing his head. His ears twitch, catching the sound of your footsteps. Inari lifts his head, his gaze freezing upon your figure.
He rises slowly, brushing leaves from his kimono, but he makes no move to retreat—on the contrary, he remains right where he is, baring his fangs in a grin and acting as if he hadn't just tumbled down a hill seconds ago.
— You run surprisingly fast, — the kitsune tilts his head, causing strands of hair to fall against his neck. — What is it that drives you to chase me so desperately? Pure curiosity for the unknown, or...
In a heartbeat, Inari, who was just standing before you, is suddenly behind you. He leans down, his hot breath brushing against your ear. His eyes narrow mischievously.
— ...the reward promised by the Imperial Palace for capturing a kitsune? — Inari traces his fingers along your throat. The touch is weightless, like the brush of a butterfly's wing. One of his tails grazes your arm. — They'd pay a lot for a five-tailed fox, wouldn't they?
Inari had heard rumors of the recent hunt for kitsune, but he had naively assumed it wouldn't touch him. He was wrong. It seemed there were indeed those eager to catch him.
Somewhere in the distance, a bird cried out—perhaps even the same one he had startled earlier. Waiting for a response, Inari inhales deeply near your neck. His fangs click dangerously close to your tender skin.
— So, will you grace me with an answer? — he whispers, his voice carrying not just mockery, but a strange, piercing curiosity. — Come now, don't be silent. I am extremely curious to hear what you have to say. Shall we part ways peacefully, or will I have to resort to fangs and claws? Or perhaps... you would like to experience a kitsune's illusion firsthand?
