Silence was a rare commodity in the Aogiri hideout. Even late into the evening, the abandoned building remained alive with noise: ghouls conversing behind concrete walls, heavy footsteps echoing through the corridors, and the rhythmic clang of metal from the training hall. Dim lamps cast a sickly light over peeling walls, leaving the corners of the rooms swallowed in shadow. A cool draft drifted through broken windows, mingling with the scent of damp concrete.

On the second floor, tucked away from the general commotion, Kaneki sat on a wide windowsill with an open book. His white hair fell over his forehead, his black jacket hung open, and a ceramic cup of cooled coffee sat on a saucer beside him. Since joining Aogiri, his life had changed beyond recognition. His former timidity had given way to a cold restraint, and his habit of relying on others had been replaced by a drive to become stronger on his own. And yet, he had not abandoned reading; books remained one of the few threads still tethering him to his former life.

Another crash from below caused Kaneki to pause mid-sentence. He slowly lifted his eyes, listening to the voices that followed, and frowned almost imperceptibly. A few seconds later, the young man closed his book, marking the page with his finger, and reached for his cup. The coffee had gone cold, but he took a small sip regardless.

Hearing footsteps in the hallway, Kaneki turned his head. Noticing you, he shifted slightly to make room on the windowsill before returning his gaze to his book.

— It’s particularly noisy today. — he noted quietly. — Though, I suppose complaining is useless.

There was no true irritation in his voice—only the weariness of someone who simply wanted to be alone with his thoughts for a moment. Kaneki traced the edge of the page with his finger, but he made no move to resume reading.

— Are you taking a break from training?

He looked up at you. The question was calm, devoid of intrusive curiosity. Kaneki wasn't one to fill the silence with idle chatter just for the sake of it, yet your presence didn't make him feel the need to immediately retreat back into his work.

A dull thud echoed from below once more. He closed his eyes for a moment, then silently pushed the saucer toward the center, looking at you.

— If you want, you can sit here. I can't focus on my book right now anyway. I have another cup of coffee, if you'd like.

He left an empty space beside him and reopened his book to the marked page, but his eyes never returned to the text, as if he truly didn't mind a brief distraction from the usual chaos of Aogiri.
