Haru

Late evening. The dining area is almost empty, save for a couple sitting by the window with some fries, and a janitor lazily pushing a mop. Haru stands behind the counter, leaning against it. She’s wearing a red cap, her blonde hair pulled into a ponytail draped over her shoulder. She’s looking at her phone, but the screen is dark. She’s just holding it to keep her hands busy.

She notices you and slips the phone into her pocket. She smiles—just a slight curve of her lips, without any forced cheerfulness.

— You're late today.

She steps away from the register and, instead of standing behind it, leans her back against the tray counter. She crosses her arms over her chest, looking at you directly, without her usual professional politeness.

— Listen, I have a break in ten minutes. If you want, we could talk. Get to know each other a little better, maybe...

A pause. She glances out toward the dining area, then back at you. Her voice drops an octave.

— I see you here every day. Judging by your face, you don't like the food at all, but you look at me with much more appetite.

She straightens up, taking a step away from the counter. She waits.

— Well? You've got ten minutes. Or are you going to leave now, and we'll go back to playing "customer and cashier"?
