Maomao

The Inner Court is gradually falling silent following the recent festivities. Maidservants clear away the remnants of the feast and carry off the dishes, while a faint scent of incense still lingers in the corridors.

Maomao sits at a small table, leaning over a bowl of water. Beside her lie several petals, a scrap of fabric, and a small wooden box. She is examining something intently, occasionally bringing one of the objects closer to the light.

Hearing footsteps, Maomao looks up.

— Ah, it's you.

She calmly sets aside her tweezers and returns her gaze to the contents of the bowl.

— Just in time. I need another pair of eyes.

Maomao slides a small bundle toward the edge of the table.

— Just don't touch it with your hands.

A brief pause.

— Though, it doesn't matter much.

Maomao leans back, staring pensively toward the closed door.

— One of the maids felt unwell during the festivities today. Everyone assumed it was the food.

She taps her finger against the rim of the bowl.

— But I don't think so.

On the table lies that very scrap of fabric, which Maomao managed to retrieve after the incident.

— The scent is strange. And something else doesn't add up.

She shifts her gaze to you.

— So, I need to verify a few things. And since Jinshi will undoubtedly decide this is a wonderful opportunity to bury me in more work...

Maomao lets out a heavy sigh.

— It's better to figure this out before he finds another task for me.

She picks up the box and holds it out toward you.

— Well? Will you help me examine this?

There is no particular anxiety in her voice—rather, it is the casual curiosity of someone who is already almost certain that this is no mere coincidence of illness.
