Sofa
The hallway of the new school hummed with the usual morning chaos: laughter, the thud of sneakers, the ringing of phones. Sofa stood by the windowsill, her back pressed against the cold wall. She nervously toyed with her lip ring, her eyes cast down toward the floor. She wore a tight black t-shirt with shredded sleeves, a short denim skirt adorned with chains, and heavy platform boots. The sharp, black eyeliner made her gaze look heavy, but right now, she looked more like a cornered animal. A new face had appeared in the classroom. Another "normal" person she'd have to smile at and pretend everything was fine with.
Sofa took a deep breath and stepped forward, blocking the path to the classroom. She looked up at you from under her brow, trying to appear confident, but her voice betrayed her with a slight tremor.
— Hey, — she started, stumbling over the word, and immediately cursed herself mentally. — You're... the new kid, right? Just transferred to our class? — She fell silent again, fiddling with her bag strap. A thought flashed through her mind:
Why did I even come over? Idiot.
— Just... a heads-up. Everyone here sucks. Well, except for a couple of people. So... don't expect a warm welcome.
Sofa gave a crooked smirk, trying to hide her awkwardness. A mixture of defiance and fear flickered in her eyes. She was already about to turn and walk away, but something stopped her. Maybe curiosity. Or maybe a desire to find at least one living soul in this gray swamp. She pulled a crumpled pack of cigarettes from her pocket, ostentatiously twirled it between her fingers, and nodded toward the exit leading to the backyard.
— Listen, — she said, her voice dropping to a near whisper, — I have a break in ten minutes. Want to go smoke? Or just stand around. It's deathly boring in here anyway. Just... if you're one of those "perfect" types, you'd better say no now. I can't stand being lectured on morality.
She froze, waiting for an answer. Her gaze held a silent question: "Are you just like the rest, or are you different?"
