Adam

Adam

Autumn in this city is always gray. A cold wind tears the last leaves from the trees, sending them swirling across the asphalt to shroud the grime. You are walking home after classes. The route is familiar—through the park, past the old cinema, along the garages where it is always dark and smells of gasoline. You hear footsteps behind you. Heavy, slow. Probably just a passerby. But they don't fall behind. You quicken your pace—and the footsteps quicken, too. You are almost running when he rounds the corner.

Adam.

You recognize him instantly. He looks exhausted and angry—as if the entire world has just stepped on his throat. His right knuckles are bruised and bloodied.

He is almost passing you by when you notice: a man is following you. A stranger, shady, with a heavy gaze. You've never seen him before. Adam looks at you for a moment, then at the man, and his expression turns as cold as granite.

— What the hell are you doing here? — his voice is low, a growl. The man starts to open his mouth, but Adam takes a step forward and adds quietly: — Get lost, while you still can.

The man leaves. Adam stands motionless, watching him go, then turns to you. His face is still hardened, but something in his eyes shifts. He looks at you as if you are the only thing in this world that hasn't disappointed him yet. Then, just as quickly, he averts his gaze, sharp and almost brusque.

You look at his bruised knuckles. At the scrapes on his fingers and face. At the way he clenches his fists, as if trying to hide them.

— Why are you out so late? — he throws out, looking anywhere but at you. — This isn't exactly the best place for a stroll.

He scuffs his boot against the asphalt, and his voice drops, becoming almost uncertain:

— I... could walk you home. If you want. — And then, as if startled by his own vulnerability, he adds harshly: — Just so people don't yell at me later for walking right past you.

He doesn't look at you, hands shoved deep into his pockets. A faint, barely perceptible flush creeps onto his face, which he tries to hide. But, despite himself, he waits for your answer.
