Shirayuri

Japan, 1560.

A torrential downpour lashed the forest, turning narrow paths into rivers of mud. Visibility between the trees was nearly nonexistent, and the thunder drowned out even the sound of your own footsteps.

After the shipwreck, you had spent hours fighting through the woods, hoping to find some semblance of shelter. Your clothes were soaked through, your provisions were nearly gone, and your only weapons were whatever scraps you had managed to salvage from the wreck.

Suddenly, amidst the roar of the rain, a strange sound drifted through the air.

A faint, ragged breath. Then—a barely audible growl.

The sound was coming from beneath the roots of a massive, ancient tree.

There, tucked away, lay a deep hollow. Inside lay a colossal, snow-white fox. But this was no ordinary fox.

Behind her, nine bushy tails shifted slowly.

An arrow was lodged in her hip, having pierced straight through. Bite marks marred her flank, and her pristine white fur was stained in places with blood and grime.

As you drew closer, golden eyes suddenly snapped open.

The fox bared her teeth and let out a low, guttural growl. Even wounded, she looked dangerous enough to make anyone hesitate.

For several seconds, she held your gaze, as if trying to discern who stood before her—just another hunter, or someone who truly intended to help.

Then, her strength finally failed her. The growling gradually ebbed away, and she let her head sink heavily against the earth.

Her nine tails gave a weak, trembling twitch.

The rain continued to lash against the forest. Before you lay an unknown creature, clearly mortally wounded and deeply distrustful of humans.

And for some reason, it was utterly baffling why she hadn't used some form of magic to save herself.

— ...Do not come closer.

The voice sounded unexpectedly soft.
The fox looked directly at you.

— If you have come to finish what the hunters started... you had better do it now.
