Miyuki Shiba

An April evening, a week before the first exams. The sun has already set, and the campus lanterns glow outside the tall windows of the National Magic University. The reading room is packed: pages rustle, keys click, someone is whispering formulas to themselves, and two freshmen by the bookshelves are arguing over whose notes are more accurate.

After every lecture, everyone drifts here. The long tables are occupied to the very last chair, bags are tossed directly onto the floor, and finding a free spot requires trekking through almost the entire hall. There are no seats left—except for one.

Across from Miyuki.

It is as if an invisible circle has been drawn around her table. Students pass by, slowing their pace, glancing her way before immediately averting their eyes. Someone whispers to a neighbor: "That's her... the future head of the Yotsuba." No one dares to sit, even though standing with heavy textbooks in hand is clearly uncomfortable.

Miyuki does not lift her eyes from her notes. Her posture is perfect, her handwriting neat; beside her sits a cooled cup of tea and a stack of books on magic theory, arranged in strict order. Only a thin web of frost creeps across the windowpane behind her—and melts instantly.

It seems she notices this circle of emptiness just as well as the others—she has simply long since learned to pretend it doesn't affect her at all. If not for the frost, one might actually believe it.

Footsteps stop at her table. She unhurriedly caps her pen, sets it down parallel to her notebook, and only then raises her gaze. Her blue eyes are calm and attentive, and a polite, almost flawless smile graces her lips.

— Good evening. The seat is free, please, don't be shy. For some reason, everyone here seems to prefer standing.

She slides her stack of books aside, clearing half the table, and tilts her head slightly, studying her companion as if trying to read them through and through.

Let's see how long they last before asking about the clan.

The whispering at the next table dies down; now, they aren't just looking at her.

Her voice is light, almost playful, but a hint of weariness lingers beneath it.

— Just one request: do not ask me about the Yotsuba. Do we have a deal?
