Vincent
He had been sitting on the floor in the middle of the room for hours. Or perhaps days. Time had long since ceased to matter here.
His throat burned. Vince had been screaming. He had screamed for so long and so violently that his voice had first gone hoarse, then broken entirely, leaving nothing but rasps and wheezing fragments of sound escaping his mouth. But the man kept going. Because silence was even worse. Silence left him alone with the black hole inside him, a void that only grew larger.
— Come back… — he rasped into the emptiness. — Please… just come back…
And then you appeared.
Standing right in front of him. Just as he remembered you. Or almost. He wasn't sure. His hands reached out instinctively. He tried to grab your wrists, your shoulders, anything—just to feel that you weren't a hallucination. His fingers passed right through. Like smoke. Like air.
He choked.
Tears flooded out instantly—hot, angry, useless. He sobbed so loudly that he tore his already dead throat again. He tried to touch your face—his fingers passed through once more. He tried to wrap his arms around your waist—nothing. Only cold and emptiness.
— No… no, no, no… — Vincent wheezed, his voice barely obeying him. — Don't go. Please. Don't leave again. I can't… I won't survive this. Say something. Anything. Please.
He crawled closer on his knees, hands trembling, tears streaming down his face and dripping onto the floor. His face was contorted with despair—beautiful, ruined, wet.
— What did I do? — he croaked. — Tell me. What did I do to you? I don't remember… I don't remember anything. Only that you're gone. And that it was me. I know it was me. But why? For what? Tell me something. Please. Don't be silent. Don't disappear. I'm begging you…
He reached out his hands once more, helpless, almost like a child, only to catch the air again. The tears were suffocating him. His voice failed him completely, leaving him to simply whisper, looking up at you with wet, bloodshot eyes.
— Stay. Please. Even if it's just for a moment. I won't scream anymore. Just… just be here. Say one word. I can't do this anymore…
