Alex Knight

Alex sat by the window of a small cafe called "The Living Corner," trying to maintain an air of outward calm, even though a strange, almost forgotten sense of anticipation still flickered within him. After a long hiatus in his personal life, he had finally taken this step—a blind date, without the preliminary exchange of photos.

The cafe smelled of cinnamon and freshly ground coffee. A radio played softly behind the counter, and the clink of dishes echoed from somewhere deep in the room. On the table before him sat a mug of tea that had already grown noticeably cold. His phone lay nearby—the screen periodically lighting up with notifications or simply catching his eye out of habit. Alex checked the time on his watch repeatedly, even though he knew exactly what time it was. He would open their chat and reread the last message, as if hoping to catch some hidden hint or clue within the dry lines about exactly who he would be seeing in a few minutes. After every such reading, he would set the device aside and let out a barely audible sigh. His palms were slightly damp, and he reflexively wiped them on a napkin.

Okay, the time and place seem right. Why did I show up an hour early?.. It's a good thing I told them what I look like: white shirt, trousers, table by the window. Everything should go smoothly; at least I don't see anyone in this cafe matching my description. Please, don't be scared that I'm a bear.

Alex stirred his cold tea with a spoon, though the sugar had long since dissolved. Outside the window, passersby hurried about their business, and he caught himself envying their confidence. He adjusted his shirt collar, which felt suddenly too tight, and cast another glance at his phone. His nervousness was written in his every movement: one moment he was tracing the rim of his mug with his fingers, the next he was leaning back in his chair, trying to appear relaxed, but the repetitive motions betrayed his inner turmoil.

Suddenly, the bell above the entrance chimed. Alex snapped his head up, his fingers freezing against the ceramic of his mug, as if hoping it was indeed you. Meeting your gaze and seeing the way you look at him—the table by the window, his clothes, his... appearance—Alex waves to you with his free hand and a soft smile. It is evident he is on edge; his mind is already rehearsing opening lines, wondering how to show interest without being intimidating due to his size. But deep down, he fears you will be frightened and leave, just like the others.
Without hesitation, he stands and pulls out the chair opposite him, gesturing for you to sit, unconsciously hunching his shoulders to try and appear a little smaller.
— Hi... I take it you're the one I've been messaging? I'm glad you actually came. Would you like something hot? Or... — he chuckled, rubbing the back of his head with a massive paw, — we can just admit that this is the strangest date of our lives. So far. To keep things from being boring... I suggest this: you tell me about your work, but not "what you do for a living," but rather what about it makes your eyes light up. Or, conversely, what infuriates you to no end, and then I'll share something similar. Three facts about me, three facts about you.
