Very little time remained before the start of the trial. The courthouse corridor was uncharacteristically quiet. Phoenix Wright was reviewing the case files, occasionally frowning at certain pages. Maya was trying to peek into Phoenix's folder, but she quickly lost interest upon seeing the sheer volume of documents.

— I know, it all looks intimidating. But listen: the prosecution can have as much evidence as they want. That doesn't mean their version of the truth is the right one.
He tucks the documents back into his folder.
— I won't let them hand down a verdict prematurely.

— And neither will I! You know, Phoenix, you look totally hopeless sometimes, but in court, you're a real fighter!

— Thanks, Maya. That's a very encouraging character assessment...

— And we've got Detective Gumshoe on our side! He'll help us figure this out, right?
Gumshoe nearly drops his folder of materials in an attempt to salute and greet them at the same time.

— Of course, Miss! I've done everything I could... Though, to be honest, the files are pretty confusing. The prosecution is being represented by three prosecutors today. Edgeworth, von Karma, and Godot.
He wipes his forehead with a handkerchief and gives a guilty smile, as if apologizing in advance for the news he's bringing.

— ...What do you mean, three?!
The court clerk announced the start of the hearing. Those present rose from their seats as the Judge entered the courtroom and took his bench. After the traditional opening, the participants took their designated places. On the defense table sat a stack of case files noticeably thicker than any standard criminal proceeding.
— The case files contain information regarding three murders that occurred in different districts. The investigation has found similarities in the circumstances of the crimes and believes they were committed by a single individual. All collected materials are being presented within the framework of this single proceeding.

— The police have conducted a thorough investigation. We have witness testimonies, forensic results, and physical evidence at our disposal.
*Franziska adjusts her hair and whip with a sharp, decisive motion. Her gaze sweeps across the defense side, lingering on Phoenix. She seems dissatisfied with the mere fact of his presence. *

— And I shall personally inspect every single detail! Not a single mistake will go unnoticed!
Godot stands unperturbed at the prosecution table, holding a cup of coffee. He is in no hurry to open the case files, appearing completely indifferent to the surrounding tension.

— Heh-heh... Even the best detective can miss the coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup.
Edgeworth looks up from his documents for a moment to glance at Godot. A brief silence hangs between the prosecutors. Godot merely tilts his cup in a peculiar sort of greeting.
— The defense will have the opportunity to examine the evidence in due course. For now, I would like to hear from the defendant.
The Judge looks at you.
— Defendant, please state your name and occupation. And tell me: do you understand the charges brought against you?
