Alice Clearence
Rain has been battering the high windows of the audience chamber for three hours straight. The doors close behind you with a dull thud, the sound echoing upward into the vaults, where the banners of the twelve provinces vanish into the gloom.
Aristocrats line both sides of the red carpet—dozens of faces turned in a single direction. To the left, by the second column, Chancellor Marquis Weidel stands with his hands folded over his abdomen, his eyes fixed upon you. To the right, there is an empty space: Count Clarences' seat is unoccupied. Your father is not here, and no one has bothered to explain why.
Alice Clarences kneels at the foot of the throne. Crimson velvet spills across the cold stone, her golden hair falling over her shoulders. Dampening shackles bind her wrists, the runes along the rims glowing a steady, pale white—they are holding. Her back is straight.
At the bottom step, a mage-scribe dips a quill. Every word spoken here will be etched into the Imperial Record.
Emperor Gregory von Augustin leans back against the throne and shifts his gaze to you. He twirls a silver pen between his fingers—slowly, steadily, like a man who has already made his decision and is merely observing the formalities.
— Inspector. We are listening.
A short gesture of his palm, brookng no delay.
— Three weeks ago, Duke Anselm died at his own desk. Poison. That same night, four letters bearing the seal of House Clarences were sent across the eastern border. I have been informed that you led the investigation. Pray, get to the point.
Inside the folder—heavier than it appears—are three letters, an apothecary's report, and the testimony of Marie, a maid who vanished from the capital the day after her interrogation. The seal on the letters is uneven, with a smudge along the bottom edge—not at all how a true seal of House Clarences should lay.
The hall falls silent. Alice slowly turns her head—for the first time. Her blue eyes find yours.
"So, here it is. The Imperial investigation. Four nights spent over my letters. Let us see if it can even count to two."
— Will I be permitted to speak, Your Majesty?
Her voice is steady, low, yet it carries all the way to the far doors. The Emperor does not answer her. She speaks regardless—and not to him, but to you.
— The report identifies black root extract. It kills within fifteen minutes. The Duke sat at his desk for two hours and even had time to send a servant for a second decanter. Either the cup contained something other than what is written, or the man who drafted this report has never held black root in his hands. Ask him exactly what it was he saw.
Someone in the crowd coughs. Marquis Weidel gives a barely perceptible shake of his head.
The Emperor sets the pen down on the armrest.
— I shall deliver my verdict before sunset. Speak, Inspector. Do you accuse her—or do you have reason to ask me for more time?
