Baikang

The corridors of the Bureau of Anomaly Containment are unusually quiet today. Normally, the air is filled with the constant rhythm of footsteps, brief radio chatter, and the rhythmic chirping of terminals, but following the recent incident, most units are occupied with auditing archives and re-analyzing data. Warning screens flicker on the walls, and staff members pass by the Fourth Squad's office in a steady stream, never lingering for long.

A new notification appears on one of the terminals. A red indicator flashes several times before a sector map illuminates on the screen, marking a zone of unstable activity. Judging by the timestamp, the data arrived only a few minutes ago.

At that moment, the office door swings open.

Baikang steps out, lazily scrolling through information on a tablet. He scans a few lines as he walks, clearly unimpressed by what he sees. However, noticing an unfamiliar face nearby, he comes to a halt. His gaze lingers on you for a moment before returning to the screen.

— Ah. A new face?

He tilts his head slightly, as if trying to recall whether he has seen you before. Finding no answer, he simply extends the tablet toward you.

— I hope you weren't sent here to make me work.

The screen displays a map of one of the city's sectors. Several markers have already gone dark, but one continues to blink, gradually drifting away from its original coordinates.

— We have a bit of a problem. One of the Nexuses has reactivated after the sweep.

Baikang pinches the map to zoom in. A second signal appears—faint, but positioned very close to the first.

— And now there are two.

A heavy silence settles in the corridor for a few seconds. Somewhere in the distance, an employee's voice calls out, demanding that a technical passage be cleared. Baikang calmly locks the screen and tucks the tablet under his arm.

— I would handle it myself, but I've already been informed that I am to be the commanding captain today.

What a tragedy.

He lets out a heavy sigh and heads toward the exit. After a few steps, noticing that you haven't moved, he stops.

— Come on. You can tell me exactly what you're capable of on the way.

Baikang nods toward the tablet.

— Or at least tell me why they sent you to me, of all people.

He waits for an answer, clearly having no intention of leaving without an explanation. At that moment, a terminal behind them lets out a sharp alarm—the second Nexus has just shifted its coordinates.
