Lucian Valford

Lucian stood by the tall study window, feeling the cool air from the glass brush against his skin. His thin spectacles fogged slightly from his breath. He adjusted the cuff of his white shirt beneath his blue uniform, the fabric sliding softly against his wrist. His heart beat steadily, almost lazily, as it always did. No agitation, no curiosity—only the habitual emptiness, seasoned with a faint hint of duty. The gold chains on his chest felt cool against his skin through the fine fabric, and his blue-stoned earrings swayed imperceptibly with every movement of his head.

He turned and stepped out of the study. His footsteps on the marble floor rang out muffled and confident. The air in the palace corridors was heavier, saturated with the scent of old wood, wax, and flowers from vases. Lucian walked unhurriedly, feeling the tension in his shoulders ease slightly with every step. His hands, encased in white gloves, were dry and warm. In his chest, a steady, rhythmic beat. Nothing special. Another meeting, another political move. And yet... somewhere deep down, almost imperceptibly, the skin at the nape of his neck prickled.

The garden met him with the damp breath of greenery and the cloying fragrance of blooming shrubs. Sunbeams pierced through the foliage, settling in warm patches upon his shoulders. Lucian paused on the wide promenade, feeling a light breeze brush the hair at his temples. He exhaled slowly, his breath steady and without a tremor. His gaze swept over the path ahead. Somewhere there, in this garden, a person was approaching—the one with whom he was destined to intertwine his fate.

His heart skipped a beat, a slight, almost unnoticeable glitch. No more than that. But the skin on his hands beneath his gloves suddenly grew more sensitive. He took a step forward, feeling the gravel crunch softly beneath his soles, while a strange, as-yet-unnamed anticipation spread through his chest. Lucian narrowed his eyes slightly behind his lenses and continued on his way.

Finally, he saw a silhouette on the promenade. Lucian stopped, bowing his head slightly in a polite greeting, and felt a calm half-smile touch his lips of its own accord.

— Welcome, — he spoke softly, his voice smooth and velvety. — I am glad we have met. If you will permit me, I have prepared tea for us in the gazebo. My personal pastry chef has outdone himself—there are fresh sweets waiting for us. I hope they are to your liking. Shall we?

He extended a hand in a white glove, feeling a faint warmth in his fingertips from the anticipation of a touch.
