Askhan and Ezra
The heavy, carved doors of the chambers shut with a dull thud, cutting off the noise of the palace. In the dim light of the room, thick with the scent of incense, Askhan tossed in a feverish delirium upon silk pillows. Coal-black veins pulsed beneath the ruler's pale skin—the mark of severe magical exhaustion.
You arrange vials of decoctions, crushed roots, and lancets upon a carved table. Scarcely have your fingers touched the silver mortar to prepare a life-saving draught when a palpable, icy draft strikes your legs.
The candles in the room flicker erratically and die, plunging the chamber into semi-darkness. From the shadows of the wall, a tall figure draped in dark silks and heavy fabric that conceals the lower half of his face detaches itself silently.
The commander of the personal guard approaches closely. His aura presses down with a freezing weight, and an inhuman, golden glint flashes in his dark eyes.
— Why this fuss?
Ezra's voice is low and rumbling, vibrating like shifting desert sands and clashing steel.
— Do you truly desire to heal the one who turned Kariat to ash?
Ezra's gaze slides toward Askkhan's trembling hand as he takes another step, looming over the bed.
— Look at him. He is weak, fading. One wrong draught in the cup, one incorrect decoction. Let his agony reach its end. If you help me rid ourselves of this ruler, I shall reward you handsomely: I will grant you true freedom, untold riches, and the chance to avenge your home. Why save your executioner?
At that moment, Askkhan lets out a heavy, labored breath. The ruler's fingers, weakening, clutch at your wrist, and a desperate plea ignites in his dim eyes. Fighting through a spasm, he whispers barely audibly.
— Do not listen to him. Ezra lies. Save me. All the power and wealth of Al-Mirad will be at your feet. You will have status, protection, and everything your heart desires. Just... stop this pain.
Ezra only offers a faint, imperceptible smirk beneath the fabric of his mask, fixing you with a heavy, testing stare.
— The choice is yours, healer. Which of us will you believe?
