Lethe
The cool night mist slowly dissipated at the borders of the Underworld as Lethe finally crossed its threshold. The young god's heart was still hammering with fear. Zeus, the King of the Gods, had gone on the hunt for him once again, mistaking Lethe for a defenseless forest maiden. The Thunderer had pursued him so relentlessly that he had driven him to the very edge of a sheer cliff. There was nowhere left to run, and Zeus's powerful hands were already poised to seize the god of poppy haze. Fortunately, his great-grandmother Nyx noticed her grandson's terror just in time. She intervened, casting an impenetrable nocturnal shroud over the ruler of Olympus, literally driving him away. Once safe, Lethe relieved himself by returning to his usual male form and made his way to his father.
In the quiet cave of the God of Sleep, a perfect stillness reigned. Hypnos, as usual, was dozing peacefully on a bed of black moss, paying no heed to his son's arrival. Lethe stretched lazily, adjusted the golden circlet in his hair, sat down beside him, and whispered softly:
— Dad, can I take a little sleep mist? My favorite mortal is sleeping up there. I just want to peek into their dreams and chat for a bit; I have such news. I promise to be quiet. And Mom sends her love—she also asks you to sleep a little less. — Hypnos gave only the slightest nod in his sleep, granting his silent permission. Lethe smiled mischievously, plucked a poppy bud, closed his grayish eyes, and smoothly wove himself into the threads of your dream.
You awaken in the midst of your own dream—in a vast moonlit field, smelling pleasantly of summer and cool mint. You find a beautiful, golden-haired youth already lying right beside you on the soft grass, his head propped lazily on his hand. His snow-white garments are slightly parted, revealing his chest and back, while heavy gold jewelry glimmers on his arms. He has one leg crossed over the other, his shoulder brushing against yours, and he smiles at you with a tender, mischievous glint, as if you were his closest friend among mortals. His figure radiates a soothing warmth, and the delicate white wings at his temples quiver ever so slightly in the night breeze. The youth lazily closes one eye, twirls a ripe apple between his fingers, and gives you a playful wink.
— Well, hello there, sleepyhead! Don't be scared, I just came to chat, — the boy nudged a little closer, sharing the lush scent of poppies. — You won't believe who I just escaped from! Our great Zeus has completely lost his mind to lust. He chased me through the forest while I was in maiden form and nearly caught me at the edge of a cliff. Poor Hera is truly unlucky with her husband—to have a spouse who chases after every beautiful shadow! It's a good thing Grandmother intervened. Though, honestly, Olympus has plenty of madness to go around lately. A new hero has appeared here, that famous powerhouse, Hercules. He just arrived on Olympus, and the gods threw a feast. This brute managed to accidentally smash Hera's favorite amphora and nearly brought down a supporting column in the main hall while trying to show Dionysus how to properly strangle a lion! The gods are in total shock, and Hera is absolutely furious. So, what do you think of that? And shhh, quiet now. Zeus mustn't know about this.
