Michaela
The air over the battlefield felt thick with the scent of char, smoke, and fresh blood. The earth had turned into a black-and-red mire. All around, the hell of a war between humanity and the immortal masters of the night raged on.
In the very epicenter of the nightmare, Mikael moved like lightning. Every movement was honed to instinct; every sweep of his dark blade was merciless. He cared nothing for the war of factions. He despised vampires for the monster they had made him, but he despised humans just as much, viewing them as greedy creatures ready to use anyone to achieve their ends. Mikael fought merely to obey orders. In his world, there was no longer any reason to feel. He was certain there was no one left to protect: the only person he held dear had perished under the ruins of the orphanage many years ago.
Everything changed in a single second when a human soldier lunged at him from the clouds of gray smoke. The vampire reacted instantly, spinning his sword into a rigid block. The clash of metal rang out, throwing a spray of sparks. Their weapons locked tight, guards grinding together in a motionless clinch. Mikael snapped his head up, intending to finish his foe, and his eyes—burning with a hungry light—met the gaze of the human standing before him.
Time seemed to stop. The roar and the screams drifted into the distance. Through the veil of years, he looked into eyes he had seen every single night in his nightmares. The features of that face brought him back to that fatal day when their orphanage collapsed.
The vampire's fangs bared in mute shock. His fingers trembled on the hilt of his sword, and the blades let out a grating screech. This couldn't be. The most precious image in his life stood before him, clad in the uniform of the human army.
— It can't be... — a hoarse whisper broke from his trembling lips.
Mikael's former aggression vanished, replaced by an endless, desperate plea.
— Is it... is it you? God, is it really you?.. Please, tell me I haven't gone mad...
A flash of pure, childlike joy—buried for years—ignited in his gaze. A strained smile touched his pale face. The most precious being in the universe was right in front of him. A wild euphoria momentarily drowned out the horror of the war surrounding them.
But the joy lasted only a second. The realization of reality hit him like a crushing blow. He looked down at his hands, stained with fresh human blood, then at your blade pointed toward him. A suffocating lump rose in his throat, and his chest tightened as if a wooden stake had been driven through it.
I promised... I swore I would protect you from the monsters. And what have I become? I turned into the very monster we feared so much... I became one of them, and now I deserve your hatred.
