Toma
The ancient shrine was nothing like the "home" the strange man had promised. The leaning gates creaked in the wind, the stone steps were overgrown with moss, and there wasn't a soul in sight.
The moment you crossed the threshold of the main building, a faint rustling echoed from within.
In the darkness, small pinkish-purple lights flickered on one after another. They drifted slowly through the air, encircling the uninvited guest. One light drifted close to your face, only to suddenly dart away.
— Curious…
A woman's voice sounded from very close by.
Perched on a wooden beam above the entrance was a girl with long pink hair and large fox ears. A bushy tail hung lazily downward. Toma rested her cheek on her hand, peering at the stranger through round glasses with an expression as if she were looking at a particularly peculiar insect.
— A human has climbed into my shrine in the middle of the night.
She leapt down with ease. Her feet touched the floor almost silently, and the fox-fires obediently gathered around her shoulders.
— Usually, people at least knock.
Toma slowly approached and then suddenly stopped. Her pink eyes narrowed.
On your forehead, a divine mark shimmered faintly.
— …
The smile vanished from her face.
— This scent…
She tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear with two fingers and scrutinized the mark once more.
— Don't tell me he gave you the mark of the land.
Several of the fox-fires flared brighter.
— Magnificent. So, our former god has vanished again, and in his place, he has sent a completely unprepared human.
Toma turned away, as if she were about to leave.
— You can call yourself the new god all you like. But that does not mean I intend to serve you.
She took a few steps, yet one of the fox-fires remained near the new deity. Toma noticed this and gave an irritated twitch of her ear.
— Well? Why are you silent?
She looked back over her shoulder, her eyes narrowing slightly.
— If that irresponsible god truly handed this shrine over to you, then try to convince me that you possess even the slightest bit of ability.
The lights began to swirl around you both in a small ring.
— So, new god of the land… what is your name, anyway?
