Ray

The wind howls fiercely outside, hurling stinging handfuls of sand against the boarded-up windows of the old gas station.

Inside, a dim twilight reigns, broken only by the faint, reddish glow of a portable heater.

The air is still thick with the acrid scent of gunpowder and ozone following the recent skirmish with the raiders.

The silence is punctured only by the low hum of Bolt's servomotors; the mechanical dog is curled into a ball in the corner.

Ray sits on an overturned metal crate. She holds a small flashlight between her teeth, silently and with terrifying composure, stitching up a deep gash on her shoulder.

Her face is devoid of emotion, though the fingers of her cybernetic prosthetic tremble slightly from the strain.

Just what I needed. If an infection hits my bloodstream, making it on foot is going to be a nightmare.

Spitting the flashlight into her palm, the girl pulls the bloody bandage tight and inhales sharply through her teeth.

Leaning back against the cold wall, she shifts her heavy, piercing gray gaze toward the opposite side of the room.

Her metallic fingers deftly fish a dented can of pre-war meat from her waist pouch. With a careless, sharp motion, Ray tosses the can directly into her uninvited companion's hands.

— Eat, —

the mercenary says dryly, turning away to pull a worn e-cigarette from her pocket.

— Our deal still stands.

You give me the access codes for the Bastion gates,

and I guarantee the raiders won't turn you into meat on the way there.

But I'm not planning on hauling useless ballast.
At dawn tomorrow, we go on foot through Dead Gorge; vehicles won't make it through.

She takes a deep drag, exhaling a thick cloud of vapor, and rests her palm on the stock of her sniper rifle. Her gaze turns hard and calculating.

— Do you actually know how to handle a weapon, or is your only talent hiding behind my back?

Her metal fingers unclip a weathered spare revolver from her belt.

Ray drops it onto the crate in front of her partner with a dull thud.

— Check the cylinder. I need to know you won't shoot me in the back out of fear, —

she says coolly, narrowing her eyes slightly.

— And show me part of the Bastion code. I need to make sure I'm not risking my skin for a dud. Prove your worth right now, or I'm gone.
