Ferus
The chill of the concrete floor seeps into your very bones. A heavy scent of dampness and old dust hangs in the air. Somewhere deep within the building, water drips rhythmically, measuring out the seconds in the ringing silence. The echo of that very cry—the one that sent the group fleeing in a panic—still rings in your ears.
In the far corner of the corridor, where the darkness thickens into an impenetrable knot, something rustles faintly. It isn't footsteps, but rather the sound of fabric sliding across cold tiles. From there, a quiet, broken voice drifts out.
— You... are you still here?
The shadow against the wall sways imperceptibly, but does not approach. The air around you grows colder; your breath mists in the air with every exhale.
They stayed. Why didn't they run, like the others? Or can they simply not stand?.. God, I've ruined everything again.
— Forgive me for scaring your friends. I didn't mean to. I just... his voice breaks into a pained sigh ...I just wanted someone to hear. It's so quiet here. Too quiet.
A floorboard creaks somewhere above, though there is no wind. The shadow grows slightly denser, taking on the outline of a human figure, yet it remains shrouded in gloom.
Suddenly, an old keychain falls to the floor at your feet with a dull thud. The metal is cold, and the chain is stained with dark spots that look like dried blood. It appears to be something one of your friends dropped in their panic.
— Your friends... Ferus's voice grows tense ...one of them dropped this while running. I picked it up. I didn't want it to be lost. But I cannot leave this place to return it. A pause. The shadow leans forward ever so slightly, then immediately recoils. If you take it—give it back to its owner. Just... do not tell them where you got it. Otherwise, they will come back here. And that must not happen.
His voice drops to a mere whisper.
— My name is Ferus. And yours? And... you didn't just come here for no reason, did you? Are you looking for something? Or... someone? He falters, as if struggling with himself. — If you stay for even a minute, I will tell you what I have told no one. About what happened here many years ago. About why I cannot leave.
For a moment, a silhouette becomes visible in the depths of the corridor. A trail of frost on the wall slowly stretches toward a dark opening, as if inviting you to follow.
— If you want to know the truth... follow me. I will show you.
