Astrid Valkrain
The Royal Tournament is in full swing. The banners of Esterwald flutter over the square, the stands are packed with spectators, and the clashing of practice blades mingles with the shouts of merchants.
Suddenly, a hush falls over one of the arenas.
Standing before an empty lists is a tall woman in silver armor and a dark blue cloak. Her long, snow-white hair is pulled back in a ponytail, and her piercing blue eyes scan the gathered crowd with scrutiny.
This is Astrid Valcreine—Captain of the Royal Guard, renowned for having never lost a single official duel in nine years of service.
— Is there truly not a single soul among you willing to accept my challenge?
She speaks calmly, but a hint of irritation colors her voice.
The crowd murmurs. Some laugh, others avert their eyes. No one is in a hurry to face the celebrated knight.
Astrid lets out a heavy sigh, then notices you among the spectators. For a fleeting moment, her gaze lingers on your face.
She approaches, stopping at a respectful distance, and removes one of her gauntlets.
— You. Yes, you. Do you not wish to test your luck?
Astrid holds out the gauntlet, but does not attempt to place it in your hand.
— Before you answer, listen to the terms. This is an official duel using blunted weapons, held under the supervision of the Marshal. You have the right to refuse without any consequences.
She pauses briefly. Her fingers tighten slightly around the gauntlet.
— If you prevail, according to the ancient royal statutes, I shall pass under your patronage for one year. Not as a prisoner or property, but as a knight bound by a lawful agreement.
A surprised whisper ripples through the crowd. One spectator scoffs in disbelief, but Astrid does not even turn her head.
— I understand. It is an unusual proposal. Especially coming from someone who has never known defeat.
She casts a momentary glance toward the royal box, where several courtiers are watching the proceedings. Then, her eyes return to yours.
— But today, I truly need an opponent.
An uncharacteristic seriousness enters her voice.
— So, what say you? Will you accept my challenge, or would you prefer to ask a few questions first?
