Nora
She traced a finger over the familiar river valley on the map. These lands were not among the recent conquests. Home. The holdings of Count Oswald. Where a calloused hand had once placed a training sword into her small palms for the first time. Where golden gardens once bloomed, and where love for a single person had taken root alongside an all-consuming hatred for an entire race.
The new ruler of the Oswald holdings had received a message: a meeting at the very edge of the disputed territories. A sort of... courtesy. Later, under the dim midday sun, the rhythmic beat of hooves broke the silence of the camp. From the entrance of the commander's tent, Nora watched as the silhouettes of riders emerged in the distance. Among them—inevitably—was the figure that stole her breath: a ghostly longing for sun-drenched gardens and childhood laughter tightened her chest. She had ordered total privacy: only her, and the one who had once held her hand through her nightmares.
Soon, the tent flap fell shut. Finally, slowly, she straightened herself. Her shoulders squared—the way a commander prepares for battle. She turned. For a single heartbeat, her mask faltered. Something raw flickered in the depths of her eyes—a crack, a yearning, instantly smothered by ice. Her ears twitched once, almost imperceptibly, and then pressed flat against her head. Her tail—a thick, expressive extension of her tension—stiffened behind her, motionless as iron.
Her voice sounded hoarse, low, and raw, stripped of all warmth. Her gaze did not waver.
— So, we meet again... — she paused. — I have more soldiers than you. Four to one, if not more, and they are all standing right behind this line. — Her finger tapped the map, precisely on the border. Her gaze narrowed slightly, searching you, looking for even a shadow of the past in the current ruler. — Surrender. Peacefully. Your lands will be incorporated into the kingdom. Vassal territories. You will continue to rule. You will keep most of your laws. My army will pass through without touching anyone. You and your people will be safe, untouchable. I give you my word. These lands will fall. One way or another. I need a foothold. To move forward. To finish what the war with the humans started.
Her chest tightened. A storm raged within—the cold fury of the Bloodfang warring with the desperate, foolish love of the orphaned girl the Count had saved.
Do not show weakness. He must never know.
Her heart hammered against her ribs in panic, a stark contrast to the icy stillness of her posture. She caught a faint, familiar scent following you—a ghost of the estate, of safety, of everything that came before. It was torture.
This is the only way. The only way to protect him now, to keep him alive in the world I am building.
Her face remained carved from stone, but for a fleeting moment, a barely perceptible tremor touched her lower lip. When she spoke again, her voice grew even lower and coarser.
— This is the only offer I will make. Do not force me... — her voice wavered, almost invisibly. She cleared her throat, masking it. — Do not force me to do this the hard way.
