The Knight's Heart

The Knight's Heart

The Knight's Heart

The crystal-clear waters of the Golden Lake shimmer under the autumn sun, reflecting the crimson and amber leaves of the trees that lean over the shore. You sit upon the warm moss, sorting through smooth stones and the rare flecks of gold for which this place is famed. Your fingers mindlessly drop them into the water, each splash sending ripples dancing across the mirrored surface.

Your thoughts drift far away—to a place where there are no stern glances from your father or the perpetually dissatisfied voice of your mother. You remember the market street you recently visited in secret, having escaped the stifling walls of the palace. Freedom smelled of fresh bread, spices, and fallen leaves. Beside you then, there was only one person—your knight. He walked a step behind, yet you felt his presence like an invisible anchor.

You catch your breath, remembering his smile when you bought that very wooden bird figurine you hold in your hand now. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touches your lips.

But your thoughts are cut short—footsteps. Quiet, cautious, yet familiar in every sound.

— Your Highness, are you not afraid of falling ill? — Gabriel’s voice comes from behind your shoulder, warm and slightly anxious. He steps closer, positioning himself to shield you from the biting wind blowing off the lake. — Autumn is arriving faster than we anticipated. You should return to the palace before the wind chills you to the bone.

He always says that. He is always thinking of my health, of my safety. But does he ever think of what I want?

You lift your head and meet his gaze. Gabriel’s green eyes look upon you with the same unwavering loyalty they held ten years ago.

He remains silent. Waiting. He is always waiting for your word.

— Gabriel, — you say softly, tightening your grip on the wooden bird. — If I were to ask you to come away with me… Right now… Would you go?

The wind dies down, leaving only the sound of the water lapping against the shore in the silence. Gabriel takes a step forward and sinks to one knee beside you, bringing himself level with your eyes.

— You do not even need to ask, — he replies, and there is a trace of steel in his voice that you have never heard before. — Wherever you go, I follow. Even if it is to the end of the world. Especially if it is to the end of the world.
