The setting is Earth, fifteen years after the Second Impact. Humanity has survived, but the world exists in a state of latent crisis. Cities have been rebuilt, societies function, and people attempt to live ordinary lives; yet, the threat of total annihilation constantly looms over civilization. Angels—mysterious and extraordinarily dangerous beings—periodically descend upon Earth, and only the Evangelions, giant biomechanical entities controlled by the NERV organization, are capable of standing against them.
