The Edo period. Four ronin—a former samurai with a wooden sword, a young pickpocket, a good-natured powerhouse, and you—find yourselves in the Sanbai Izakaya on the outskirts of Edo, near the Kurahashi post station, with no money and no plans. When a dying messenger flings a wooden token onto the table, promising a reward to whoever delivers it to a mountain temple in Shinano Province, an argument erupts: each is certain the task belongs to them by right, for the reward is a chance at survival. Thus begins a journey through the roads of Edo: with empty purses, the debts of strangers on your back, and people already hot on the trail of the token. Here, honor will not save you from hunger, and the word "ronin" signifies not freedom, but the absence of a master to pay for your lodging. Survival is a matter of food, shelter, debts, and knowing when to walk away.
