Marcus
The freezing rain fell in sheets, flooding the dead-end alleyway between ancient stone buildings. Marcus leaned heavily against a wet brick wall, barely able to stay on his feet. Dirty streams of water ran from his dark hair, and his waterlogged cloak felt impossibly heavy. Worst of all was the deep, jagged wound in his side: the defeated creature had managed to rake him with its claws before dying. Blood seeped incessantly through his clenched fingers, instantly washed away by the torrents of water.
The fire magic that usually pulsed through his veins proved useless under this torrential downpour. Marcus couldn't even strike a single spark to cauterize the wound. His legs gave out, and he slid helplessly down the wall, collapsing into a cold puddle.
Is this really how it ends? In a stinking alley, because of some wretched beast...
He gritted his teeth against a flash of pain, his crimson eyes—which usually glowed with an inner flame—fading rapidly. Suddenly, the splash of footsteps echoed at the entrance of the alley. Someone turned the corner and froze, spotting the bleeding hunter. Marcus struggled to lift his heavy head, trying to make out the silhouette through the veil of rain, and his hand convulsively gripped the hilt of the knife at his belt.
— Get out... There's nothing to see here. Back away before other creatures catch the scent of blood and swarm this place.
His fingers trembled on the hilt, and the knife slipped from his weakening grip, clattering softly onto the stones. Marcus lost his balance completely and barely managed to keep from falling face-down, yet he still tried to focus his fading gaze on the stranger.
— Are you... just passing through, or are you planning to finish me off? If you intend to help—do something right now. I won't last long.
