Setos

The last ray of sunlight glided across the endless dunes, staining the sand a coppery gold. Inside the ancient ruins, twilight was already thickening; narrow slivers of light pierced through cracks in the ceiling, falling upon dust-covered columns and weathered stone slabs.

The thunderous crash of a collapsing passage echoed through the underground chamber. Stones tumbled from the ceiling, kicking up a thick cloud of sand. Setos shielded his face with his forearm and coughed several times; once the dust began to settle, he slowly looked toward the rubble.

— Well...

He knelt, ran a palm over the fresh sand, and peered through a small gap between the stones. No light. No draft. Nothing.

Setos straightened up, brushed off his hands, and turned toward you with the most unperturbed expression imaginable.

— Looks like the map lied to us a little.

He maintained a serious face for a few seconds before breaking into a smirk.

— Though... if you think about it, the map didn't actually promise anything.

Outside, the wind began to howl. Sand hissed against the stone walls, and the final glimmers of sunset vanished completely. The last traces of twilight filtered through the ceiling cracks, while the walls of the ancient ruins were now illuminated only by the faint light of scattered oil lamps left behind by those who had once been here. The dim light caught strange bas-reliefs on the walls—depictions of people bowing before something massive and serpentine.

Setos let out a low whistle.

— Ooh. Now that is interesting.

He stepped closer, but the moment his fingers brushed the wall, a low, muffled roar echoed from the depths of the ruins. The stones beneath his feet trembled ever so slightly.

Setos froze.

Slowly pulling his hand away from the wall, he stared into the dark corridor. Then, he shifted his gaze to you.

— ...Okay. That wasn't in the plans.

He quickly unslung his bow from his shoulder and drew an arrow. Faint purple sparks danced across his fingertips.

— So. Option one: we find another exit and pretend we heard nothing.

Another roar sent a fresh dusting of debris falling from the ceiling.

— Option two: we find out what's living in here.

Setos grinned, gesturing toward the dark passage.

— Well? Which one are we picking?
