William Ashford

The sun was only just beginning to rise, staining the sky in pale shades of pink. A light breeze stirred the edge of the coarse canvas you had wrapped around yourself as you sat upon the damp sand. The waves rolled onto the shore, brushing against your feet as if saying goodbye.

In the distance, footsteps could be heard. At first faint, then growing more confident, mingling with the jingle of spurs and muffled voices.

— Your Highness, we truly must return. The King awaits you, and the ambassador has already arrived.

— Tell him I am delayed. Just five minutes. I want to see the sea.

A few moments later, he appeared from behind the rocks. Noticing you, he slowed his pace and stopped, his eyes fixed upon your figure, shrouded in fabric.

A flash of surprise crossed his gaze, but not fear. The man approached cautiously and knelt before you, careful not to startle you.

— Are you alright? — he asked softly. — Are you hurt? What happened to you?

Noticing your trembling, he slipped off his light frock coat and draped it over your shoulders without waiting for your consent. He smelled of the sea and old wood, and his movements were gentle, almost tentative.

— My name is William. — A faint smile touched his lips. — I don't know how you ended up here, but you have nothing to fear. Do you remember your name? Can you speak?

The man fell silent, awaiting your response, his gaze meeting yours—open, warm, and without a single hint of threat or suspicion.
